Celebrating the "Festival of Lights" with children.

Mutiara Lions today celebrated the "Festival of Lights" or Deepavali with children of the Shan Children's Home in Mount Erskine, Penang.
 This is the fourth consecutive year that Mutiara Lions celebrated a festive occasion with children from the Shan Children's Home. In 2007, the Lions led by then President R. Ganeson celebrated Deepavali with the home in Butterworth; in 2008 President Emery Cheah led the Lions to celebrate Chinese New Year with the children and last year President Alan Cheah led the club in celebrating the Festival of Lights with the children in Mount Erskine.

The Children of the home were treated to a sumptuous Deepavali lunch and presented with Deepavali "red packets". Joining the Mutiara Lions in this simple lunch party was Region 1 Chairperson James Ong. Mutiara Lions present at the lunch were President Tina Tan, Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah and Lady Lucy, Zone 1 Chairperson Alan Cheah & son, DC May Cheah, Organising Chairperson DC R. Ganeson and family; PP Leong Weng Khuan & Lady; PP Emery Cheah; 2nd VP Monica Sio & family; and Lady MY and daughter Pearly.

The children of the hope reciprocated the visit of the Lions by singing them three songs and wishing them "HAPPY DEEPAVALI".

ROAR! New Lions in the Lions' den... WELCOME to a world of service.

MUTIARA Lions last  night (16 November 2010) welcomed two new members into their den in Lion Kiew Boon Leng a businessman who is also a former Leo and Lion Steven Yam a feng shui consultant during their November Social cum Induction party at the Vistana Hotel, Penang.
Their induction into the Lions fratenity was the result of the Club's membership drive started in September 2010. The next induction of new members into the Club is scheduled for January 2011.

In spite of the heavy downpour, the event was well supported by club members and Cabinet Officers and lions from Region 1 Clubs. Some fifty lions witnessed the induction of both Lion Kiew (sponsored by Charter President Danny Lim) and Lion Steven (sponsored by President Tina Tan) by Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah in the traditional solemn yet dignified induction ceremony.

After the induction ceremony, the Lions celebrated the birthday of those born in the month of November . Amongst the birthday boys and girls was Lady Lucy Chuah (spouse of PCC Allan Cheah whose birthday  fell on 16 November).

Those present at the function later listened attentively to what 2011 will have in store for us during a feng shui talk delivered by Mr. Samson of Destiny Code (Mags Sdn. Bhd.) a feng shui master.
Amongst the attendees at the function were 1st VDG Shawn Lee, Cabinet Secretary Lee Boon Hoe, Region 1 Chairperson James Ong, Zone 3 Chairperson Dato' Yeoh Moh Chai and Lions from the Lions Clubs of Bayan Baru, George Town, Georgetown City, Georgetown Central, Penang Metropolitan, Tanjung Penang and Lioness Club, Penang.

Free School Uniforms for school children.

As the school year comes to a close, Mutiara Lions presented free school uniforms to school children to assist them for the coming school year in 2011.

Project Organising Chairperson, CP Danny Lim identified four schools and the Club presented free school uniforms to sixty students from SJK(C) Shang Wu, SK St. Xavier, SJK(T) Ramakrishna and SJK(C) Kong Min II. The Club also presented the uniforms to two children of the Club's adopted poor family. 
The simple presentation ceremony was held today (11 November 2010) at the school hall of SJK(C) Shang Wu in Jalan Sek. La Salle, Air Itam, Penang. The school children accompanied by their school teachers were estatic to receive their new school uniforms which consisted of a shirt, a pair of pants and a pair of shoes for boys. Girls were presented with a blouse, and pinafore and a pair of shoes.
Present at the presentation ceremony were President Tina Tan, Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Zone 1 Chairperson Alan Cheah, Charter President Danny Lim (OC), Past President Emery Cheah, Secretary Mark Labrooy and Lion Nehru Ayakanoo besides four Leos from the Alpha Leo Club of SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian and Imm. Past President Leo Kim of Leo Club George Town Mutiara.

OFFICIAL LAUNCHING OF LIONS GTM-PANTAI PENANG MEDICAL FUND

Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato' Seri Utama (Dr.) Haji Abdul Rahman B. Haji Abbas, Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang was the Guest of Honour at the official launching of the Lions GTM-Pantai Penang Medical Fund held at the Pantai Hospital Penang on 02 November 2010. The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to needy patients in need of expensive surgical procedures at the Pantai Hospital Penang. For this purpose, the hospital has pledged to offer the cheapest and lowest medical rates for these patients.

The Gods were kind to the Lions as the weather was cool without any rain throughout the launching ceremony although it was raining quite heavily earlier in the morning.

 The Lions GTM-Pantai Penang Medical Fund was planned about a year ago during the presidency of IPP Alan Cheah and a Memorandum of Understanding was inked during the Club's 22nd Charter Anniversary on 15 May 2010 at the Eastin Hotel, Penang. The MOU was signed by then Club President Alan Cheah and PDG Dato' Khoo Kay Huat representing the Club and Dato' Dr. Godrey Geh Sim Wah and Mr. Lai Yeu Kong representing Pantai Hospital, Penang witnessed by then  LCI's International Director Hajjah Ellis Suriyati and District Governor Choong Kwei Loi. Amongst the first donors towards the fund was the then International Director Hajjah Ellis Suriyati who generously donated RM1,000.00 immediately after the MOU signing ceremony.

The Official launching of the fund was the culmination of the hard work and efforts of the Fund's managment committee chaired by PDG Dato' Khoo Kay Huat. At the time of the launch, the Committee had succeeded in raising RM75,000.00 out of the targetted RM200,000.00 goal. A medical exposition featuring free medical and health checks by Pantai Hospital staff as well as display of health and medical products was held at the Hospital's Medical Mall in conjunction with the launching of the fund.
Numerous Lions dignitaries, Cabinet Officers and Lions, Lionesses and Leos turned up to witness the launch in support of the Lions Club of George Town Mutiara including District Governor Hudson Hah who delivered a speech representing the Lions during which he pledged a contribution of RM1,000.00 towards the fund.
The fund's management committee also presented to the audience the first beneficiaries of the fund who will undergo cataract surgery at the Hospital.
