Health Seminar - Osteoporosis

In collaboration with Holista Colltech (Aust) Ltd., Lions Club of George Town Mutiara presents a health seminar on Osteoporosis on Sunday, 16 October 2011 from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Northam Hall, Level 3, The Northam All Suite, Penang.

The seminar will be conducted by Y.Bhg. Dato' Dr. Rajen M who holds a doctorate in Holistic Medicine from the University of LaSalle, USA. He is also a member of the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society, a member of the Ministry of Health's Standing Committee on traditional medicine, a member of the Alumni Research Caucus and Industry Panel of USM, a founding member of the Malaysian Dietary Supplement Association and an active newspaper columnist since 1995.


Admission to the seminar is FREE and the first 100 early birds will receive a mystery goodie bag. There will also be a lucky draw for participants of the seminar. "J" Project ... MoU Signing Ceremony

Another chapter in George Town Mutiara's history was written when President Mark Labrooy inked a historic Memorandum of Understanding with the Executive Director of NPO Urban & Community Development of Tokyo, Japan, Mr. Yushi Kumagai on Sunday 25 September 2011.
The signing of the MoU marks the start of a project whereby Japanese nationals affected by the recent earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan on 11 March 2011 will be temporarily relocated to Penang in a bid to revitalise their lives and their morale. The first group of Japanese nationals are expected to arrive in Penang by December 2011.


 The historic occasion was witnessed by Guest of Honour, the Hon'ble Lion Phee Boon Poh, Penang State Executive Councillor for Health, Welfare & Caring Society who in his speech, pledged the unreserved support of the Penang State Government for the project. The other witnesses were the Deputy Consul-General of Japan, Penang, Ms. Hiroko Taniguchi and District 308 B2 Governor Shawn Lee.
Lions dignitaries present at the event were Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah Cheng Wah, 1st Vice District Governor Tan Swee Kok, 2nd Vice District Governor Lee Boon Hoe, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Region 1 Chairperson Dato' Yeoh Moh Chai, District Cabinet Officers including numerous Clubs Presidents and Lions.
All attendees were treated to a sumptuous high tea after the signing ceremony held at the Eastin Hotel, Penang.

"J" Project ...

Mutiara Lions have embarked on another humanitarian project named the "J" Project ... "J" standing for Japan ... when they ink a historic Memorandum of Understanding with the NPO Urban & Community Development (NPO UCD) of Tokyo, Japan this 25 September 2011 at the Eastin Hotel, Penang,
The Club in collaboration with the NPO UCD of Japan will temporarily repatriate japanese nationals affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan recently for a six month period to Penang.
The historic signing of the Memorandum of Understanding will be done in the presence of Guest of Honour, Y.B. Tuan Phee Boon Poh, Penang State Executive Councillor; H.E. Mr. Tetsuro Kai, Consul-General of Japan and District Governor Shawn Lee.


Organising Chairperson for the project Lion Ed Kiew reports that the first japanese families to be temporarily repatriated are expected to be in Penang latest by end of the year.

Lions GTM Charity Golfathon 2011...Courtesy Call on TYT Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang

Members of the Lions GTM Charity Golfathon 2011 Organising Committee led by Lions GTM-Pantai Penang Medical Fund permanent Chairperson Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat paid a courtesy call on Tuan Yang Terutama Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, Tun Dato' Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Abdul Rahman B. Haji Abbas at Seri Mutiara yesterday afternoon.
Tuan Yang Terutama Tun will be the guest of honour at the Charity Golfathon scheduled to be held at the Penang Golf Resort, Bertam, Penang. Tee off is scheduled at 7.30 a.m.

 The organisers of the Charity Golfathon have targetted to raise RM100,000.00 for the medical fund, set up in 2009 to help and subsidise needy patients who require medical and surgical treatment at the Pantai Hospital Penang.  To date, the fund management committee has disbursed some RM20,000.00 to assist various patients since its launch in November 2010.

During the courtesy call, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat announced the main prize for the Charity Golfathon ... a VOLKSWAGON POLO 1.2TSI ... for a "HOLE-IN-ONE" sponsored by the SeaSwift Group of Companies. To date, there are two prizes for a "hole-in-one", the other being a 40" SONY BRAVIA LCD Television set sponsored by Region 1 Chairperson Dato' Yeoh Moh Chai.

Education project ...setting up of Library at the Seri Cahaya Welfare Home, Penang

Mutiara Lions together with the librarians of the Logos Hope joined hands to set up a library at the Seri Cahaya Welfare Home in Permatang Damar Laut, Batu Maung, Penang yesterday, 07 September 2011.
President Mark Labrooy led the Mutiara Lions in setting up the library with the support and assistance of the Logos Hope librarians led by Chief Mate Jaco Knief. The crew later had a session with the children of the home teaching them how to make book marks and maintain the newly set up library.
On hand to witness the setting up and simple opening of the library were District Governor Shawn Lee and 2nd Vice District Governor Lee Boon Hoe. 


Mutiara Lions raised RM5,000.00 amongst themselves for this project under the able leadership of Organising Chairperson Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah.

Visit to the LOGOS HOPE...

The world's largest floating library, the LOGOS HOPE made her maiden visit to Malaysia when the ship with a crew of four hundred (400) from fifty (50) countries docked at the Swettenham Pier in Penang on 18 August 2011.
Mutiara Lions, took advantage of this visit to bring one hundred and fifty (150) primary school children from two primary schools vis. SRJK Shang Wu and SRJK Kong Min 2 on a tour of the ship. The Children were treated to a one hour caultural performance by the crew of the ship and thereafter taken on a tour of the ship and her library.
Mutiara Lions in attendance at this project were President Mark Labrooy, PCC Allan Cheah, PDG Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Secretary (ZC) May Cheah, 2nd VP Gertrude Soong, 3rd VP Ed Kiew, PP Leong Weng Khuan & Lady, Lady Loh Meng Yik (spouse of CP Danny Lim) and PP Alan Cheah. The Mutiara Lions were joined on board by President Margaret Tham from the Lions Club of KL Megacity (District 308 B1).
