It's FRIDAY ... Day 5 of our Relieving the Hunger Project!

For the fifth straight day this week, Mutiara Lions spent the evening with the less fortunate and needy of our community. Providing them a proper hearty dinner to end their day.

News of the project had spread and the turnout was beyond our expectations. On the 1st day we provided 100 packets, 2nd day, 80 packets and 3rd to 4th day 90 packets each day. Today (5th day) we prepared 95 packets of food, but it was not enough as the crowd was larger than expected and we had to rush to purchase an additional 35 packets of food to cater to all those who turned up.

The finale of the project will be on 20 January 2012 (Friday) whereby the Club will prepare food for 150 persons together with goody bags. In celebration of the upcoming Chinese New Year, "ang pows" (red packets) will also be distributed to those who turn up on that day.

Day 3 of "Relieving the Hunger" Project...

The inclement weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm and spirit of Mutiara Lions on the third day of their "Relieving the Hunger" project at the Kechara Soup Kitchen premises at Halaman Ariffin off Burmah Road, Penang. The skies opened up just before the distribution started, showering "blessings" on both the givers and receipients of this noble cause. However, this did not deter the Lions from their goal.

Ninety packets of "steaming" hot vegetarian rice, mandarin oranges, wafers, biscuits and mineral water were prepared and distributed by Lions of George Town Mutiara Lions Club on the third day of their effort to relieve the hunger amongst the homeless, less fortunate and needy of our community. Amongst the registered recipients were retirees, single parents, the aged, the handicapped and the neglected less fortunate of our community.

Through the efforts of the project secretary Past President (Zone 1 Chairperson) May Cheah, the menu for the food packets are changed everyday so that the receipients can enjoy the taste of different dishes. Even the caterers are changed every two days so that there is a variety in cooking styles.

RELIEVING THE HUNGER...

Mutiara Lions kicked start 2012 with a project aimed at "relieving the hunger" of the destitute and homeless of our society. With the support of the Kechara Soup Kitchen, an NGO which provides free food for the needy homeless and vagabonds, Lions Club of George Town Mutiara last night embarked on a project in line with Lions Clubs International's theme project for January 2012.
The project spearheaded by Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, saw Mutiara lions hitting the streets of the inner city of Penang to deliver packed food and goodies to the multitude of homeless whose only bed was a straw mat on the five foot way of shop houses.
President Mark Labrooy led the way accompanied by Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Zone 1 Chairperson (Club Secretary) Past President May Cheah, Club Treasurer Past President Ann Khor, Past Presidents Alan Cheah, Joe Quah, Yeow Chin Chuan, Emery Cheah and Lions Monica Sio, Gertrude Soong and Ed Kiew. Together with representatives of the Kechara Soup Kitchen, the Lions drove in a convoy covering the entire inner city starting from 10.30 pm until 1.00 a.m distributing some 100 packets of free food and goodies.
The Lions will continue this project for a week and the final distribution date will be the 20 January 2012 whereby red packets will also be distributed in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations on 23 January 2012.
