Region 1 Bowling Competition

Our Club will play host to this year's Region 1 Bowling Competition together with our Omega Leos. This competition will be held at the Penang Bowl on Sunday 13 December 2009 from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.
Lions interested to represent the Club can contact Lion Monica Sio at 012-4703396 (as soon as possible) to register our team.
Closing date for registration is 05 December 2009.

Health is Wealth ... 29 November 2009

The Clubs first joint health project was a success judging the public's response to the free health checks and health talk. The hall of the Caring Complex was full of people queueing to participate in the various free health check stations...BMI, Blood Sugar, Eye test, Blood pressure, haemoglobin etc, etc.
Our Lions also went for the free health checks... Charter President Danny Lim donated blood.
Lions who spared their time to attend the project were President Alan Cheah, Organising Chairperson Teng Eng Teik, PP Leong Weng Kheong & family, PP Ann Khor & Family, CP Danny Lim & family, Lion Monica Sio, Lion Gertrude Soong and Lion Tina Tan.

Region 1 Lions Idol singing Competition

Region One will be organising the Region 1 Lions Idol karaoke singing competition on 16 January 2010 at a venue to be confirmed. There will be two rounds of competition - a preliminary to be held in the day time and the finals during a fellowship dinner party.
The purpose of this contest is to select representatives from the Region to participate in the District level competition scheduled to be held in March 2010.
Contestants are required to bring their own CD/DVD and register two songs to be sung either in English, B.M., Mandarin, Hokkien or Cantonese only. Entry fees for contestants is a modest RM10.00 only whilst participation in the fellowship dinner party is RM50.00 per person. Lions interested to participate in the singing competition can prepare themselves from now on.
Organising Chairperson for the Region 1 contest is Regional Committee Chairperson Lion Ooi Soon Theng from LC Georgetown Central.

Health is Wealth ... 29 November 2009

Health is Wealth ...
Our Club will be jointly organising a health project together with the Lembaga Pelawat Hospital Pulau Pinang, Hospital Pulau Pinang together with several other non-Governmental Organisations to conduct Health talks, Blood donation campaign, free Health checks etc for the general public at the Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang Pulau Pinang on 29 November 2009 from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Several exhibition booths by pharmaceutical companies will also be set up.
Guest of Honour at this project is the Hon'ble Minister of Health, Dato' Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
Lions who are interested to participate can drop by the complex between 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Celebrating Christmas


MERRY X'MAS!!!
Yuletide season is nigh!!! The season of giving is upon us!
Lions of the Lions Club of George Town Mutiara remembers the community.
We will be celebrating Christmas with thirty five residents of the PENANG CHESHIRE HOME, Babington Avenue, Penang with a potluck party. The residents will be treated to a sumptous dinner specially cooked and prepared by Lions members, given christmas presents by "Santa Claus" and enjoy a merry merry evening.
This party will be held on ... 26 December 2009 at 7.00 p.m.

Region 1 Sports Carnival 2009

NEWSFLASH!!!
Lions Club of George Town Mutiara together with the Leo Club of George Town Mutiara will be organising the Bowling Tournament event for the Region 1 Sports Carnival 2009.
This event is slatted for 13 December 2009 (Sunday) at the Penang Bowl. Invitations will be sent out to Region 1 Clubs to participate. Each team shall consist of 4 bowlers who will each bowl 3 games in the preliminary rounds. More details will be forthcoming soon.

Donation Box cash collection at Pantai Hospital, Penang.


Our members paid a visit to the Pantai Hospital in Jalan Tengah to count the collection from the donation box placed at the Hospital's cashier's department. Lions who were at the hospital were President Alan Cheah, Treasurer PP Quah Bah Aik, PP Teng Eng Teik and Lion Gertrude Soong. They were joined by 1st Vice District Governor Hudson Hah who stopped by Penang on his way to attend the OSEAL Forum in Pattaya.

Our members visited Mr. Ravindran's home today to present much needed daily necessities like rice, biscuits, cooking oil, etc. Lions present during this visit were Organising Chairperson PP Quah Bah Aik, President Alan Cheah, Imm. Past President Emery Cheah, Past President Teng Eng Teik, Lion Monica Sio and Lion Gertrude Soong together with Jade and Pearly Lim (daughters of Charter President Danny Lim).

Presentation of free school uniforms to students


Thursday, 19 November 2009...

Our Club today presented free school uniforms to thirty (30) students from five(5) schools today. The simple presentation was held at the school hall of SJKC Kwong Min 2 in Paya Terubong. The recipients were the three children of our adopted poor family (Mr. Ravindran), 17 from SJKC Kwong Min 2 and 10 from SK St. Xavier, Air Itam, Penang.

This annual projects was organised and arranged by Charter President Danny Lim who unfortunately was unable to attend due to work commitments. Lions present at the event were President Alan Cheah, Past President Teng Eng Teik, Imm. Past President Emery Cheah, Lion Gertrude Soong and Lion Monica Sio.

The Club officially sponsored an inmate of the Penang Cheshire Home for one year. Club President Alan Cheah and Past President May Cheah attended the home's "Foster Parents Open Day" to present the club's contribution to the home. The function was graced by YABhg Toh Puan Dato' Seri Utama Hajah Majimor Shariff, the consort of H.E. the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang.

The Club's fostered inmate is CHAI POH HIN (34 y.o) who suffers from Cerebral Palsy resulting in unstable movements, moving around on tip toes with limited speech ability but he is able to take care of himself.

Annual presentation of free school uniforms.

Our Club's annual presentation of free school uniforms to needy students will be carried out as below:

Time: 9.00 a.m.
Venue: SJKC Kwong Min II, Jalan Paya Terbuong, Penang
Attire: Smart Casual/Club T Shirt with Vest

This year, the club will be presenting free school uniforms to 30 students from five schools. The uniforms consists of a shirt and a pair of pants (pinafore & blouse for girls) and shoes. Project Organising Chairperson CP Danny Lim hopes that members will be able to turn up for the simple presentation ceremony.

Last respects!


Members of the Club led by 2nd Vice President Tina Tan paid their last respects to Mdm Khaw Ah Chin, late mother-in-law of President Alan Cheah who passed away on 25 October 2009 during her funeral held on 28 October 2009 at Farlim. Lions who attended the funeral were Club Treasurer Past President Quah Bah Aik and Lady Ivy, Past President Teng Eng Teik and 1st Vice President Danny Ooi.

Deepavali Celebrations with Children of Shan Home

Our Club treated the children at the Shan Childrens Home at Bodhi Heart Sanctuary, Mt. Erskine, Penang to a belated Deepavali lunch treat. All twenty one children were also presented Deepavali "ang pows" by Club President Alan Cheah. The Club also presented a small donation to the home.

Members of the Club who attended the function were Organising Chairperson Past President R. Ganeson and his family, Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah and Lady Lucy, 2nd Vice President Tina Tan, Lion Gertrude Soong and Lion Monica Sio and her children. Joining the club members was Zone 2 Chairperson, Ong Hong Seng who was specially invited to be part of the festivities. .

Deepavali Celebrations with Children


Our Club will be celebrating "Deepavali" with the children at the Shan Children Home at the Bodhi Heart Sanctuary in Mount Erskine this Saturday 07 November 2009. The Club will be treating the 21 children at the home to a luncheon and will also be giving them Deepavali "ang pows".


All Lions and family members are cordially invited to join us and bring joy to these children to commemorate the "Festival of Lights". Let the lustre of our PEARL shine bright on these children and bring they joy and comfort.
Members are welcome and encouraged to bring other goodies for the children during this visit.

CHARITY COUNTDOWN 2010...update


The Club's annual year end fund raiser is ON...
Ticket sales has been quite brisk and to date twenty (20) tables have been confirmed "sold". So, Lions please hurry up and book your tickets before they run out. The organisers have engaged a popular DJ (disc jockey) for the evening and this is liven up the atmosphere for us to usher in "2010" in high spirited fashion. The brand new Eastin Ballroom of the Eastin Hotel is the venue for our Countdown Party.
The Club's annual fund raiser priced at RM80.00 is an all time low whereby patrons are provided with a sumptous buffet dinner, free drinks (the whole night through - whilst stocks last) and fantastic entertainment. All funds raised will be used for the Club's Poor Family Fund, Medical Fund and Education Fund.
Guest of Honour is none other than the Honourable Dr. P. Ramasamy, Deputy Chief Minister II of Penang.
The highlight of the evening - a raffle draw featuring the top prize of a 32" TOSHIBA LCD television, an art masterpiece and many others ... all for RM10.00/ticket.

Lions Club Penang Host Anniversary Dinner

The Lions Club of Penang Host celebrated their Charter Anniversary with a fund raising dinner at the Rumah Peranakan, Lebuh Gereja, Penang. Our clib was represented by Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Past Presidents May Cheah and Ann Khor.
President Alan Cheah had to cancel due to family bereavement.

Think Green Be Green Environmental Educational Project

31 October 2009 ...

The joint Lion/Leo Environmental-Educational Project was successfully held at Prangin Mall, Penang from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. This project involved seventy students from twelve primary schools in Penang. The students were required to participate in a craft making contest and a quiz. The craft making contest required the students to create useful items using recycled items like newspapers, plastic bags etc, whilst the quiz was based on environmental subjects.
The Guest of Honour at the project was Head of the Education Department's co-curriculum unit. Also present was 2nd Vice District Governor Shawn Lee, District Chairperson for Leos, Alan Thoo,
Region Committee Chairperson (Leos R-1) Ong Lai Peng besides our very own Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah and Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat who were the quiz masters.
The quiz Champions were SJKC Han Chiang whilst the team from SRK Convent Pulau Tikus won the craft contest.

Lions Fellowship Night

30 October 2009 ...

Region 1 and Region 2 organised a "Lions Fellowship Night" in conjunction with the Multiple District 308 Council meeting in Penang at the City Bayview Hotel, Penang.
Our Club was represented by President Alan Cheah, Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Past President May Cheah, IPP Emery Cheah, 2nd Vice President Tina Tan and Lion Gertrude Soong at this function.
During the function, LCI's International Director Hajjah Ellis Suriyati presented Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards to three recipients from Region 1, one of whom was Past President R. Ganeson. President Alan received the award on behalf of PP Ganeson who was unable to attend the function due to business commitments.
Lion Tina Tan managed to win 2nd prize in the spot dance contest held during the function.

2nd District Cabinet Meeting


25 October 2009 ...

The 2nd Cabinet Meeting for our District was held at the Tanjung Bungah Beach Hotel, Penang at 9.00 a.m. The meeting was attended by Cabinet Officers from our club namely District Chairperson PP Teng Eng Teik and Region Committee Chairperson Lion Tina Tan. Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat also attended the meeting.
It was heartening to note that our Club was reported (by the Zone Chairperson) to be the most active in Zone 2 of the district.
