Mutiara Lions kicked start 2012 with a project aimed at "relieving the hunger" of the destitute and homeless of our society. With the support of the Kechara Soup Kitchen, an NGO which provides free food for the needy homeless and vagabonds, Lions Club of George Town Mutiara last night embarked on a project in line with Lions Clubs International's theme project for January 2012.
The project spearheaded by Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, saw Mutiara lions hitting the streets of the inner city of Penang to deliver packed food and goodies to the multitude of homeless whose only bed was a straw mat on the five foot way of shop houses.
President Mark Labrooy led the way accompanied by Past Council Chairperson Allan Cheah, Past District Governor Dato' Khoo Kay Huat, Zone 1 Chairperson (Club Secretary) Past President May Cheah, Club Treasurer Past President Ann Khor, Past Presidents Alan Cheah, Joe Quah, Yeow Chin Chuan, Emery Cheah and Lions Monica Sio, Gertrude Soong and Ed Kiew. Together with representatives of the Kechara Soup Kitchen, the Lions drove in a convoy covering the entire inner city starting from 10.30 pm until 1.00 a.m distributing some 100 packets of free food and goodies.
The Lions will continue this project for a week and the final distribution date will be the 20 January 2012 whereby red packets will also be distributed in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations on 23 January 2012.
